Conversations About Power
The heavy application of materials was intentionally used to speak to the heaviness of the subject matter. The layers on top of layers speaks to amount of baggage I am trying to unfold. What am I trying to say here? Subconsciously I think I wanted to speak about my own abuse, I appreciated having a platform to say something without making it about me. The way that this project has connected so many people around me was really powerful. I wanted to talk about how sexual abuse can impact a person’s life, how there are varying degrees of abuse, I wanted to make people feel heard and empowered and less alone in their experience. But I also wanted to talk about mental health, and not just that of the survivors. What causes a person to abuse someone else, particularly minors and children? Are they suffering from their own form of mental illness? Is there anything that we, as a society, can do to help them in order to prevent more acts like this from occurring? Is their work/art still valid? Can we make progress by having difficult conversations that make us uncomfortable? I suppose there is only one way to find out. We need to try.
