CONVERSATIONS ABOUT POWER

Conversations About Power is the latest project that I am working on. Fellow artist and sexual abuse survivor Julia White and I are co-organizing a traveling art show for a cause. Our primary goal is to spread support and resources to survivors of sexual abuse. Hopefully we can extend that support to help educate friends, family and community members about the lengthy effects of trauma so that we can move together into a consent based culture. We will pose difficult questions concerning mental health on either end of the spectrum. From survivors to abusers, how do we as a society handle trauma, PTSD, depression, power? Can we improve? How?

Through the collection of audio testimonials, we offer survivors the option to have a platform to share their story and reclaim their voice. These testimonials will travel with the exhibition, being played on loop inside of a sound booth that participants can enter at their own volition. The organizations we are affiliating ourselves with will help us provide resources and support for participants and exhibition goers. Julia and I have committed to donating 20% of our painting sales to RAINN (Rape Abuse & Incest National Network), a national organization that works to end sexual violence.

We are now officially a proud DreamMaker Project for The Ink People, meaning we are partially-funded through The National Endowment for the Arts and The California Arts Council. We are currently in the grant-writing and fundraising stage of the process. Tour dates and venues will be released soon. Please feel free to visit our website (link above and below) to get even more information and some photographs of the event.
